The transfer of Boaz Myhill to West Bromwich Albion has been completed.

He passed a medical and agreed a three-year contract before the sale was announced last night.

West Brom’s official website today states that he will be in Roberto Di Matteo’s squad for their friendly away to Coventry today.

Meanwhile, City play their only home friendly – the final game of pre-season – today against Dundee United at the Circle. Matt Duke will be in goal for the Tigers, with Mark Oxley the only other professional goalkeeper on the club’s books. The 20-year-old, who signed from Rotherham United two years ago, made his league debut on loan at Grimsby Town in February, and returned during a goalkeeping injury crisis to play a further two games in April.

All City fans will join in thanking Boaz for his tremendous effort, performances and achievements while guarding our goal for 6 and a half seasons, and sincerely wish him well with the move and the rest of his career. Likewise, we wish Matt Duke the best of luck in making the number 1 shirt his own.

An offer of £1.5m from West Bromwich Albion has been accepted for goalkeeper Boaz Myhill.

Myhill, who has 8 international caps to his name after pledging his allegiance to Wales in March 2008, is now in talks with West Brom and could complete the move this weekend.

Should the deal go through, Myhill will be returning to the West Midlands almost 7 years after leaving Aston Villa to join City for £50,000 in December 2003. He was almost ever-present in City’s rise from Division Three to the Premier League.

The 27-year-old will compete with club captain and the three-times England international Scott Carson for a place in the team as the Baggies return to the top flight. Goalkeeping coach Dean Kiely also remains on the playing staff.

Comment

Ideally City wouldn’t have to let a proven performer and integral member of the squad leave, but this transfer should suit all parties.

City have got a good price for the player; he’s not gone on the cheap. Matt Duke should be an adequete replacement, if he wasn’t considered first choice anyway. We’re not likely to go out and buy a new goalkeeper any time soon, but when we do we may just find the next Boaz Myhill closer to the price we paid for the original than the price we sold him for.

West Brom are getting a good player whose best years should be ahead of him. Goalkeepers supposedly peak in their 30′s.

Myhill himself could benefit from leaving City. Certain aspects of his game have always been scrutinised and different coaching may bring about an improvement.
