The redesign is ongoing but anyone can now post topics and comments.

Logging in has been made as quick and simple as possible to open it up to anybody who wants to post or comment. Find the login box on the right-hand-side. If you are one of the 450 who already registered within the past year you can type in your username and password, or if the email address you registered with is linked to your Facebook, Twitter, Google, Yahoo or WordPress.com account, just click the button and you will be authenticated that way without needing to type in your Hull City Online username and password.

If you are a new user, you can use your login to the aforementioned sites to begin posting straight away (then choose a display name afterwards, if you wish). Alternatively, click the Register link and verify your email address before logging in.

Once logged in, the Post New Topic box will appear on the right-hand-side. Enter the title and content, then click the ‘Post this topic’ button at the bottom – as simple as that. If you prefer, click the ‘Visual Editor’ button to use extra formatting options and insert images.

The page design isn’t entirely finished yet. The ‘header’ area where there is only a temporary logo in place obviously needs building. Rest assured that the page content won’t be shoved lower down the page to accommodate adverts and logos at the top – unlike other sites. The colours aren’t perfect yet where there is a grey and amber clash. Most significantly, the way the list of topics is displayed needs addressing. Currently, the most recent posts (ie. topic starters) appear at the top of the page, regardless of whether another topic has a more recent reply. A solution to this is still being worked on. In the meantime, find the latest comments on the right-hand-side. These issues aside, I hope you find the new design clean, simple, and fast-loading.

A design feature being trialled is the comments view. All comments appear on one page, like the ‘Topic’ view style. Those that prefer ‘Thread’ view may be pleased to see replies to a previous comment ‘nested’ beneath that comment. This may make it clearer to see who is replying to whom. However, this could be an unfamiliar way of viewing a topic so I will listen to feedback.

As stated, this redesign isn’t yet finished so you may find faults or have suggestions. Please tell me them! Leave a comment below, post a new topic, or email me at andy@hullcityonline.com and I will do my best to get this site just how you want it.

I hope to find some of you joining me here before/during/after tonight’s match.

Hull City Online will be back soon

Hull City Online is undergoing a total redesign to try to rectify what turned out to be wrong with the previous version of the site. The following are at the forefront of my mind:

1) A fast-loading page, without bells and whistles, just easily readable text in a clean design.

2) A simple message board system which is easy to post on and navigate between threads (though this may mean losing ‘features’ of this previous system, such as image uploads etc.)

3) Easily accessible to all. This is something I don’t think the other boards offer and it seems to be a complaint amongst former users of this site that they are now spread out too thinly across three or four separate sites. If I can make it very easy to login here and read/post messages from other platforms – mobile phones, Twitter, Facebook, RSS readers – I think that could really improve the reach of this board to get more people involved.

4) ‘Thread’ view. I possibly have a solution where it would be like Topic view (ie. all the replies displayed on one page) but replies to individual posts in the thread would be ‘nested’ beneath the one it is in reply to rather than being at the bottom of the thread with no indication which post within the thread it is in reply to. I think it will have to be tried out to see whether it makes it clearer or less clear to read.

Are these the right priorities? What else would you like?

I was criticised last year for redesigning without consulting users. At the time, that was difficult because of the situation I was in with Footymad, and the time constraints of getting it up for the start of the season and the time I could afford to pay a designer for. Now, I can be completely open and take as much time as is necessary, and I encourage you to give me feedback. I will show you work in progress to get it right.

Please leave a comment below to get involved, or email me privately on andy@hullcityonline.com if you prefer.

Welcome to the all new Hull City Online

After 9 seasons on the Footymad network, Hull City Online has returned to being an independently hosted website. This change has allowed us to add new features and functions, and the layout has been totally re-designed.

Under the Features category heading, you will now get more regular analysis of the latest news. There will be previews of every match and interviews with supporters of our opponents.

One of the big additions to this site is the new Blogs section. You can register to have your own page on Hull City Online to post about whatever you feel like. If you’re not interested in posting your own blog you can still read other people’s blogs and find Featured Posts showing you the best blog entries from users and our writers, and post comments in response to blog entries you read.

Another new addition is the Photo Gallery. Here you can find photos taken by fans, and if you have any of your own you can upload them directly onto the site.

The other categories and pages in the menu at the top are quite self-explanatory and will grow over the coming weeks, but needless to say you will continue to find the greatest depth of City content on the internet here on Hull City Online.

The message board was of course a popular part of the old site, and we are pleased to offer even more functions on our new forum. You now have the ability to send private messages to other users, subscribe to threads you want to come back to later, and quickly see where new posts are. Everyone will have to register (then check your email to get your password) to start posting on it but this is quick and free to do, and of course now it is independent of any other message boards you will have greater choice of what username to have, and only people registering through this site – not other teams’ sites – will be able to post. We hope this will make us much less of a target for spam and unwanted abusers of the board, which became a daily problem on the Footymad network of message boards. Please note that it is not possible to modify a username after you have registered, so choose it carefully. You only have to register once and your login will work for both the message board and posting Blogs. Blog posts will automatically be shared on the message board unless you specify it not to, and comments beneath your blog post will be combined with replies on your message board thread to make it easier to get greater interactivity.

In summary, we are retaining the best of the old site but with many more things to offer on top, which has only been possible by making this move. It is necessary for us to display advertising for us to be able to produce this website and we hope you will use the links displayed, but we think you will find it much less intrusive than the multiple adverts on Footymad.

12 years on from first setting up this unofficial Hull City site, I will now be assisted by Paul Bryant, or The_City_Tiger as users of the old message board will have known him. If you are interested in writing features for the site or contributing in any other way, please email me.

Thanks for joining us on the all new Hull City Online, whether you’re a regular of the old site or a new user, we’d love to get your feedback and your first impressions of using the new functions.
